As we approach 2025, the landscape of nonprofit fundraising continues to evolve rapidly. Shifting donor preferences, emerging technologies, and an ever-changing economic environment are shaping how organizations connect with their supporters. Here are the key trends I anticipate will define fundraising efforts in the coming year:
Personalized Donor Experiences
One surefire way to capture and maintain donors’ attention is to utilize personalized engagement tailored to their values and interests. If you aren’t already, use data analytics and donor management platforms to create customized appeals, recognize past contributions meaningfully, and offer opportunities that align with individual passions.
Digital and Virtual Innovations
The digital transformation in fundraising is still going strong. Virtual events, online giving platforms, and peer-to-peer fundraising tools will continue to play a significant role in engaging diverse audiences. Enhanced user experiences on mobile platforms and seamless donation processes will be key to converting interest into action.
Emphasis on impact reporting and transparency
This is probably one of the most important trends that I hope we’ll see more of in 2025, especially on the heels of recent cases of fraud in Minnesota such as Feeding Our Future, Smart Therapy, and Star Autism. Nonprofits need to provide clear and accessible information about the use of donations to build trust and donor confidence. Emerging technologies like AI chatbots and blockchain for transparent giving are also expected to gain traction. This article by Charity Digital explains more about the use of blockchain in nonprofits.
Focus on Younger Generations
Millennials and Gen Z are becoming significant forces in philanthropy. These generations prioritize social justice, transparency, and measurable impact. Nonprofits must engage them through social media, storytelling, and opportunities for hands-on involvement. It will be helpful to ensure your organization has opportunities to volunteer as a way to bring these generations closer to your work. In addition, platforms like TikTok and Instagram will remain crucial for capturing their attention and fostering connections.
Sustainable Giving Models
Recurring giving programs, such as monthly donor circles, will continue to grow in popularity. These models provide nonprofits with a steady, predictable income stream while allowing donors to make consistent, manageable contributions. If your organization doesn’t already, invest the time to develop a monthly giving program. Give it a catchy name, and invite your donors to be part of it. Assign impact to each giving level (e.g. $10 feeds a family for a day; $20 provides transportation for a working mom; $50 provides diapers for a month, etc.).
Donor Retention and Stewardship
It is far more expensive to retain a donor than to acquire a new one. On average, nonprofits spend $1.50 per dollar raised to acquire a new donor, but only $0.20 per dollar raised to retain an existing one. In an increasingly competitive environment, retaining existing donors will be as important as acquiring new ones. In 2025, nonprofits should be investing in robust stewardship programs, emphasizing gratitude, transparency, and consistent communication to deepen relationships with their supporters.
What are you predicting?
These are just a few predictions that I have as we head into 2025. What are you seeing on the horizon? What trends do you think will emerge in the coming year?
